Legal Bill Sticker Shock Is Common
You hire counsel, discuss hourly billing rates and the scope of the project. You might call and ask a few questions. Then you receive your first legal bill, and are surprised at how quickly time entries and charges have built up.

What you need to know about legal bills
Whether you hire Bill Equity or go it alone, you should know that most lawyers are paid based on two metrics only: the revenue they bring into the firm (by bringing in new clients) and the number of hours they work and bill to client matters. This means that lawyers are pressed to bill the most hours they can on every matter they handle, or they will not make their billable hour requirement.
If a lawyer does not either (a) bring lucrative clients to the law firm who pay their bills quickly, or (b) bill a lot of hours to clients for legal work performed, there are consequences. Consequences include being warned to bill more hours, having compensation reduced, and being fired. All of this pressure explodes into bill inflation, where attorneys bill more and more aggressively, or enter time days, weeks or even months after the time is worked to help bolster month-end or year-end numbers (best practices require lawyers to enter time daily, but many do not).
Bill Equity’s team is intimately familiar with law firm billing practices. If you are suffering from legal bill sticker shock, call us. We will review your legal bill and secure a discount for you, or you pay us nothing.
LAWYER ENGAGEMENT SERVICES
Don’t Hire A Lawyer Until You Consult With Us!
Working with attorneys can be intimidating. First, attorneys sometimes pride themselves on explaining matters in terms that are hard for a layperson to understand. Secondly, intimidation is built in by billing rates and practices. It’s difficult to chat with your attorney when you know that you’re being billed in six minute increments for every conversation.
If you have not yet started working with an attorney, Bill Equity will help you find the best counsel for your project type and geography, and then establish billing parameters with the lawyer to ensure that the intimidation factors are removed and you, the client, get the best legal outcome for the smallest amount of money.
Are You Getting The Legal Bill Shake Down?
Here are some simple tips to help you avoid getting the legal bill shake down:
- Remember that fixed fee arrangements are almost always your friend. We can negotiate fixed fee arrangements for you up front.
- If paying by the hour, ask for a discounted hourly rate.
- If paying by the hour, ask for a more junior (and less expensive) timekeeper to handle your work.
- If paying by the hour, ask for progress reports on fees every Friday.
- If paying by the hour, hire Bill Equity as a bill auditor for every bill issued.
