Debt from medical bills can quickly derail financial security. The founders of Bill Equity learned this firsthand, when we took our daughter to the emergency room to be cleared for a concussion so she could return to school after a high school sports injury. The process was quick – we spent about 5 minutes with a physician’s assistant, who asked standard concussion clearance questions. There was no physical examination. You can imagine our surprise when we received a bill from the emergency room for $1200 – and that was after adjustment for insurance.
We spent more time working out a discount on the bill than we spent during the entire emergency room visit. But we were successful, and negotiated a 35% discount!
